James J. Freeland, a longtime resident of Hillsborough, began developing then Daniel Boone Country in 1965 as a recreational area for the people in Orange County and it is still owned by the Freeland family today.

Now, The Shops at Daniel Boone are the most unique shopping attraction of Historic Hillsborough and stand at the Gateway to Historic Downtown Hillsborough.

One tablet on the monument pictured above says the following:

"From this spot where stood the

Old State House,

was started an expedition of

frontiersman under

Col. Richard Henderson,

for Kentucky, led by

Daniel Boone

March 17, 1776"
